ABSTRACT
This study, titled “From Recognition to Practice: Successful DRRM Strategies in Gawad KALASAG Award-Winning DepEd Schools,” explored how Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) strategies are implemented and sustained in award-winning schools. It aimed to identify key DRRM practices, describe their integration into school operations and culture, and determine the challenges and successes experienced in implementation. Using a qualitative research design, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with the School Heads, Administrative Officers, DRRM Coordinators and students from Mankayan National High School and Lepanto National High School in Benguet, both recognized Gawad KALASAG awardees.
Findings revealed that DRRM strategies were effectively integrated through curriculum inclusion, regular drills, and active collaboration with local stakeholders. These practices fostered a culture of preparedness and resilience among students and staff. Despite limited funding, insufficient equipment, and occasional behavioral issues among learners, the schools sustained their DRRM efforts through community partnerships, volunteerism, and continuous training. The success of these initiatives was attributed to the shared commitment of school leaders, teachers, students, and the local community.
The study concludes that the integration of DRRM strategies significantly enhances school safety and preparedness. Sustained excellence requires institutional support, continuous capacity building, and active stakeholder engagement. It recommends that other schools adopt similar practices to strengthen disaster resilience and align with national DRRM frameworks.
