Abstract
This study explored the influence of parental support on the enhancement of children’s early literacy, focusing on factors such as home-based support, school participation, and communication with teachers. Conducted at San Ramon Elementary School in Claveria, Masbate, the study involved 60 parents who were surveyed using a questionnaire. The findings revealed that most parents were aged 35-44 years, predominantly female, married, and had completed high school. While many were unemployed, a significant number were housewives or househusbands, with most families earning below Php 10,000 monthly. Despite these challenges, parents exhibited high levels of involvement in their children's literacy development, especially in providing writing tools, encouraging independent reading, and participating in school activities.
Children demonstrated exemplary skills in vocabulary, letter recognition, and phonemic awareness, although their comprehension skills showed room for improvement. The study found no statistically significant difference between parental support and children's literacy development, suggesting that other factors may contribute to literacy outcomes. Parental challenges included financial constraints, limited access to books and digital resources, and time limitations. Despite these barriers, parents remained committed to supporting their children’s literacy.
Based on these findings, the study recommends that schools collaborate with local government units to provide affordable learning resources and flexible literacy engagement opportunities. Educators should focus on enhancing reading comprehension skills, while parents should be supported through targeted workshops and guidance. These efforts aim to overcome existing challenges and further improve early literacy outcomes.
