INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Academic motivation plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational experiences and outcomes of students in the law school. Kusurkar et al. (2013) and Wouters et al. (2016) studies underscore the importance of fostering intrinsic motivation in medical education. While selection procedures may provide a short-term boost in motivation, long-term academic success and well-being are more closely associated with students' intrinsic interest in the field.
Conversely, developing students' ability to understand texts effectively is a crucial aspect of education. Comprehension involves not just reading words but also interpreting, analyzing, and making connections with prior knowledge. Rivera and Taglucop (2019) emphasized that effective strategies are necessary to improve students' reading comprehension skills, particularly in secondary education.
Bello and Gumarao (2016) investigated the coping strategies employed to manage academic stress. The research identified three primary coping mechanisms: problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and avoidant coping. Findings revealed that students frequently utilized both problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies, while avoidant coping was less commonly adopted.
Alternatively, some law students may struggle with motivation when it comes to reading comprehension, particularly if they find the materials to be dense, difficult to understand, or disconnected from their personal interests. These students may feel overwhelmed by the volume of reading required in law school and may struggle to find the motivation to engage with the material in a meaningful way.
The researchers moved towards the reading on the literature regarding law students’ motivation and reading comprehension strategies, yet found nothing. Therefore, this study is relevant and timely and must be pursue to do more regarding this issue.
Overall, this study will discuss the motivations and reading comprehension strategies among law students. This will give everyone a clear understanding by addressing the specific strategies of law students in relation to reading comprehension and motivation.
