Abstract
This qualitative study explored the financial management practices, economic contributions, and sustainability challenges faced by street vendors. The research aimed to understand the complexities of their financial lives, their role in local economies, and the factors influencing their long-term viability. The study has five research objectives: First, to explore the economic role of street vendors on regional trade, employment, and income generation; Second, to examine how street vendors manage their finances particularly in budgeting, saving, and investment practices; Third, to identify key financial challenges faced by street vendors; Fourth, to assess the sustainability of street vending businesses for long-term financial stability; Lastly, to propose a financial management plan for street vendors for the improvement of their financial stability and business growth. In-depth interviews and observations revealed their vital role in providing affordable goods and services, especially in low-income areas, acting as an employment safety net for marginalized groups. However, income volatility, limited access to formal finance, and informal savings practices created significant challenges. Many vendors faced debt cycles, spatial constraints, intense competition, and a lack of government support. The study concludes that street vendors are an undervalued asset, demonstrating remarkable resilience despite systemic exclusion. Policy interventions promoting access to credit, financial literacy, and supportive infrastructure are crucial to improve their livelihoods and enhance community resilience. Further research could examine the effectiveness of specific interventions to improve the financial well-being and sustainability of street-vending enterprises.
