ABSTRACT
This study examines the challenges in English proficiency encountered by first-year Criminology students of Liceo de Masbate Colleges Inc. and how these difficulties may affect their academic performance. English serves as the primary medium of instruction in higher education, making it important for students to have a strong foundation in the language. However, many students experience difficulties in grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, which may hinder their ability to understand lessons and actively participate in class.
The study employs a descriptive research design to explore students’ experiences and identify common language-related challenges. Data are collected through surveys with selected first-year Criminology students. It also considers possible factors such as limited exposure to English, lack of confidence, and differences in educational background.
The study aims to determine how these challenges influence students’ academic performance, particularly in completing written tasks, understanding instructions, and expressing ideas clearly. It also seeks to provide insights that may help improve teaching strategies and student support. Addressing these concerns may contribute to better academic outcomes and help students become more prepared for the communication demands of their future profession.
