This study explores the professional and personal challenges faced by Registered Guidance Counselors (RGCs) with diverse nature of clients, as well as the coping strategies they employ to address these challenges. Using a qualitative case study design, four (4) RGCs from selected high schools and universities in Tarlac Province were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify key themes. Findings reveal the professional challenges faced by the RGCs such as stigma, challenges in following ethical guidelines, limited and costly procedural requirements, challenges in student engagement to the guidance-related seminars, inadequate provisions of counseling rooms, availability and budget scrutinization, lack of administration support, work-related tolerance and geographical constraints in delivering counseling services. Registered Guidance Counselors also faces personal challenges such as self-doubt, work-life imbalance, emotional deregulation, and workplace interpersonal challenges.
Furthermore, RGCs’ coping strategies to address professional challenges include cultivating patience, establishing professional boundaries, engaging in sponsorships and linkages, and pursuing continuous professional development. Meanwhile, personal challenges are managed through coping mechanisms that include sharing problems with trusted individuals and practicing mindfulness.
The study proposes a comprehensive support system for RGCs, which includes institutional and administration support, training and upskilling programs for RGC’s and mental health and well-being program. Educational institutions are encouraged to implement the proposed support system to enhance and strengthen guidance and counseling services offered by the RGCs.
