This study aimed to assess the awareness and practices of sari-sari store owners in Naval, Biliran, regarding inventory management. Sari-sari stores served as vital micro-enterprises in the Philippines, providing essential goods and income for households, yet many faced challenges due to poor inventory control. The study sought to determine the demographic profile of store owners, examine the level of awareness of inventory management, identify current practices, and explore the issues and challenges encountered. Using a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through interviews and direct observations with twenty (20) purposively selected store owners. Thematic analysis was employed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework.
Findings revealed that participants ranged in age from 28 to 69 years, with most between 30 and 60 years old. Middle-aged owners demonstrated higher engagement in inventory monitoring, while older owners preferred traditional manual methods. Store operators with over five years in business employed systematic approaches such as product categorization, expiry monitoring, and regular stock checks, while less experienced operators relied on visual inspection and manual lists. Awareness of advanced inventory tools, such as demand forecasting and digital systems, remained limited. Common issues included stockouts, overstocking, expired goods, capital constraints, and supplier delays.
The study concluded that sari-sari store owners demonstrated practical knowledge of inventory management, though methods were often informal and experience-based. The research recommended regular training programs, simple inventory tools, and the adoption of the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method to improve efficiency, sustainability, and profitability among small-scale retailers in Naval, Biliran.
