Introduction
Literary writings convey meaning not only via their topics and stories, but also through the specific words authors choose to use. The distinctive style and meaning of a literary work are made up of the words, the grammatical structures, the figures of speech used by writers. Stylistic analysis thus offers a systematic way of investigating how language achieves literary effects for readers and learners.
The interest of the study of microstructures is that it focuses attention on the linguistic aspects at play in the text. Leech and Short’s stylistic framework is capable of studying lexical categories and figures of speech as qualities through which writers create emphasis, description, rhythm, imagery and other stylistic effects. The original study states that style deals with the manner of the use of language in a certain context, by a specific person and for a specific purpose.
Philippine short stories are a rich corpus for stylistic analysis as they depict Filipino experiences, relationships, values and cultural realities using varied narrative and linguistic tactics. The present study limits itself to the microstructural dimension of the original study to find the repeating linguistic and stylistic characteristics throughout six selected Philippine short stories.
