Abstract
Mathematics achievement is influenced by both cognitive competencies and affective characteristics that shape how learners approach mathematical tasks. This study examined whether problem-solving skills and mathematics anxiety significantly predict mathematics achievement among junior high school students at Raniag High School, Ramon, Isabela. A quantitative descriptive-correlational and predictive research design was employed involving 160 students from Grades 7 to 10 selected through stratified random sampling. Data were gathered using a researcher-developed problem-solving skills test based on Polya’s four stages, an adapted mathematics anxiety questionnaire, and students’ official mathematics grades. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that students demonstrated proficient problem-solving skills and moderate mathematics anxiety, while their overall mathematics achievement was very satisfactory. Problem-solving skills showed a significant positive relationship with mathematics achievement, whereas mathematics anxiety demonstrated a significant negative relationship. Regression analysis indicated that both variables significantly predicted achievement, with problem-solving skills emerging as the stronger predictor. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening strategic mathematical thinking while reducing anxiety through learner-centered instructional interventions and supportive classroom environments.
