Introduction
Social Studies is an important component of elementary education because it helps learners understand people, places, historical events, cultural practices, social institutions, and civic responsibilities. In the Philippine basic education curriculum, Araling Panlipunan aims to develop learners who can understand their society, appreciate their national and cultural identity, evaluate social issues, and participate responsibly in community life.
Contemporary instructional approaches emphasize inquiry, collaboration, contextualization, and the development of critical thinking. In an inquiry-oriented classroom, learners investigate questions, examine appropriate sources, and formulate explanations supported by evidence. Teachers guide this process by selecting meaningful learning materials, asking purposeful questions, providing feedback, and helping learners distinguish reliable evidence from unsupported claims. Research on historical inquiry and teacher professional development has likewise examined how training may support teachers’ use of primary sources and inquiry-based instructional practices (Cinnamon et al., 2021).
