Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the non-fiction writing of students in the College of Teacher Education (CTE) at Surigao del Norte State University – Claver Campus using Davis’s (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The study employed a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative methods through a survey based on the TAM indicators: Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Attitude to Use, Intention to Use, and Actual Use. Using Slovin’s Formula, 172 respondents were selected from the total population of 302 students, the majority of whom were first-year students (27.5%) with most enrolled in the BEED and BSED-English programs (43.8%).
The findings revealed that students generally perceive AI as a useful tool for research, essay writing, and reaction paper writing, particularly in generating ideas quickly (mean = 4.30). However, the study also found that AI sometimes provides inaccurate or inappropriate information (mean = 4.22), which may negatively affect the organization and development of explanations in writing. The results further showed that perceived ease of use was the strongest factor influencing the actual use of AI.
Overall, the study confirms that the ease of using AI contributes to students’ positive perceptions of the technology; however, challenges regarding the accuracy of content remain. The study recommends the implementation of AI literacy and ethical use programs, along with clear academic policies, to ensure that AI serves only as a support tool and not as a replacement for students’ genuine writing skills, originality, and academic integrity.
