Abstract
This research focused on unravelling the life situations of six Set 1A Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries in Cawayan, Masbate, for seven years, from 2015 to 2022. The study aimed to address problems, such as how the 4Ps grantees describe their life situation after seven years as program beneficiaries, the challenges they face, how they cope with these challenges, and the recommendations based on the findings.
A phenomenological design was employed for the study, with data collected through interviews and home visits to the six participants. This approach allowed for a deeper understanding of beneficiaries’ experiences and perceptions. The study identified three major themes known as life situation, challenges experienced, and coping mechanisms. Within life situation theme, sub-themes were formulated to explore specific aspects in detail, including education, health, and Family Development Sessions (FDS). In terms of education, all participants have narrated that the program has significantly emphasized to them the value of having children achieve a better life in the future through positive support to their children’s education. On the other hand, in terms of health conditionality, all participants gained ample awareness as to where and what health services they can avail. Then, the FDS has positively contributed to the awareness raising which is a great source of motivation for families to persevere to uplift their well-being. Regarding challenges experienced, sub-themes such as economic challenges, educational challenges, and parental responsibilities were formulated. Financial struggles were primarily caused by seasonal income from farming, caused by a lack of higher education and opportunities. For coping mechanisms, the sub-themes of family support, resilience, and spiritual beliefs emerged. Participants adapted by budgeting wisely, accepting challenges, relying on family support, and praying for strength. Despite hardships, they remained hopeful, optimistic, and faithful, believing in their abilities to overcome problems and improve their lives.
