Abstract
This paper examines how social media affects students socially, psychologically, and academically, focusing on the perspectives of teachers, parents, and students. The study found that most respondents were aged 16 to 17, a stage of life marked by growing independence and increased responsibilities in both social and academic spheres. A higher number of respondents were female, with the largest group coming from Grades 10 and 12. The students reported spending an average of 30 minutes to 1 hour on both studying and using social media, suggesting short but frequent interactions with academic tasks and social platforms.
In terms of social impact, social media was found to positively influence students’ lifestyles, communication abilities, and awareness of social issues like gender equality. However, it also led to addictive behaviors and strained relationships with family and peers. Psychologically, while it helped boost self-esteem and reduce shyness, social media use also contributed to anxiety, depression, and emotional suppression. From an educational standpoint, social media supported research and academic discussions but negatively impacted writing skills, focus, and overall academic performance.
A notable finding was the significant alignment between teachers, parents, and students in perceiving the dominant effects of social media, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach to address related challenges. Based on these insights, recommendations include the implementation of academic support programs, enhancement of digital literacy, and greater cooperation among teachers, parents, and students to encourage responsible social media use. This would enable students to benefit from social media while minimizing its negative effects, fostering healthier social, psychological, and academic development.
