Abstract
Artificial intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, has emerged as a valuable tool in fictional writing, facilitating idea generation, enhancing linguistic expression, and promoting creative storytelling among writers. This study examined the effect of utilizing ChatGPT on the fictional writing skills of third-year Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) students at Cebu Technological University–Moalboal Campus. Specifically, it aimed to determine whether the use of ChatGPT improves students’ fictional writing skills in terms of narrative voice, characterization, plot, setting, language and writing mechanics. An experimental one group pre-test–post-test design was employed, involving 92 respondents who completed fictional writing tasks before and after a structured AI-assisted instructional intervention. The outputs were evaluated using an analytic rubric. The findings indicated that pre-test performance was at the “developing” level of proficiency across all components, while the post-test results indicated that performance improved to an above-average level in narrative voice, characterization, plot, language, and writing mechanics, whereas setting improved to an excellent level. Results of the paired-sample t-test further revealed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p < .001). Qualitative findings also suggested that ChatGPT facilitated idea generation, enhanced vocabulary development, and improved structural clarity. The study concludes that the integration of ChatGPT as a supplementary instructional tool significantly enhances students’ fictional writing skills, especially when embedded within a well-structured pedagogical framework that fosters guided learning and creative expression. It is recommended that educators provide appropriate guidance and supervision and establish ethical guidelines to ensure responsible use while upholding academic integrity.
