Education is the process of imparting knowledge, skills, values, and the development of the learner. In the process of teaching and learning, motivation is one of the important factors that influence the success of the learner. When a learner is motivated, he or she will participate in the learning process, complete the work, and perform better in examinations.
Teachers have different strategies that are used to encourage learners to participate in the learning process. The use of the reward system is one of the strategies that are used by teachers to encourage learners to participate in class activities. A reward system is a way of recognizing the efforts of the learner, positive behavior, and achievements in order to encourage the learner to behave in the same way in the future. The reward may be in the form of verbal praise, certificate, recognition, incentive, and other simple things like points and stars.
For learners in Grade 5, encouragement and recognition are very important because they are at a stage where their motivation will determine their interest in learning, and their behavior in the classroom. When a learner is recognized for his/her effort, he/she becomes motivated, confident, and will be willing to participate in academic activities. Positive reinforcement will also improve the performance of the learner and learning habits.
At Tanque Elementary School, it is important to know how the reward system is affecting the performance of the learners in order to know how it can be improved to enhance the performance of the learners. The aim of this study is to find out if the reward system has any significant effect on the performance of the grade five learners at the School during the School Year 2025-2026.
The findings of this study may benefit teachers, school administrators, parents, and future researchers by providing valuable information about the importance of appropriate reward systems in supporting learners’ academic development and achievement.
