Introduction
The mastering of integer operations is an important part of fundamental mathematics as it gives students the underlying knowledge that they will need for more complex mathematical ideas. However, some students have challenges in comprehending and executing the operations for integers, especially with addition and other simple calculations. The action study that had been done showed that the learners who participated in the research need to improve their proficiency on the basic operations on integers especially in addition. Thus, the study identified the initial level of competency of the learners prior to the implementation of a remedial intervention.
The play-based intervention was designed to address identified challenges in integer operations through remedial training, diversified learning experiences, conceptual scaffolding, and engaging activities. The diagnostic evaluation was seen as an important first step since it identifies the current level of comprehension of the learners and allows the teaching to be adapted to their individual learning gaps. Thus, the study focused on the pre-test performance of the Key Stage 2 learners who participated as a basis for the requirement of a remedial-based intervention.
