INTRODUCTION
Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, process, and reflect on what one reads. It involves learning new information, skills, and strategies that help students appreciate different texts. Engaging in reading also enables learners to interact with a wide array of print materials.
Despite being able to read, most students struggle to understand what they read, particularly in inferential and critical comprehension. Although they can decode the words on the page, many are struggling to comprehend information on higher levels of understanding.
Students in schools can read passages quickly and with ease. The problem is, they cannot make meaning beyond the literal information on the page. This is the reason why reading comprehension remains a major problem in the Philippines.
One strategy to help students learn to understand is by applying reading comprehension strategies that actively engage them while they read. Reciprocal Teaching is one of these strategies, which includes four key activities: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy significantly increases the reading comprehension of Grade 7 students.
