The learning environment is crucial to determining a kid's future, and every child has a fundamental right to an education. However, overcrowding in classrooms is a problem in many schools nowadays, particularly in elementary schools.
Students in kindergarten through third grade (Key stage 1–KS1) are in a critical developmental time where they require the most care, support, and direction. They are just beginning to acquire the fundamentals of reading and numeracy, and instructors provide them with a supportive environment, ample space, and the best possible supervision to help them form strong study habits and behaviours. A safe, roomy, well-ventilated, and distraction-free setting is excellent for early childhood education so that instructors can attend to each child's unique requirements.
However, this ideal is distant from the reality in many educational institutions today. Nowadays, packed classrooms are a typical problem, particularly in public and rapidly expanding private institutions. This occurs when there is a high student-teacher ratio because there are more pupils enrolled than the typical classroom can accommodate. When too many students occupy a small area, it frequently leads to a lack of resources, inadequate ventilation, a lot of noise, and little space for movement.
In the field of education, the overcrowding effect is a contentious issue. Large classrooms, first and foremost, teach kids how to adjust and socialise. However, several studies show that overpopulation poses significant problems. In crowded settings, young kids may exhibit characteristics like excessive talking or misbehaviour, short attention spans, hyperactivity, and difficulties focusing. Furthermore, it is physically hard for a teacher to provide each student the same amount of attention while dealing with a large class, which might result in some pupils falling behind in their academic achievement.
Although this is well known, it is crucial to research how it impacts students, particularly the youngest ones. Thus, the purpose of this study is to look at how crowded classrooms affect Key Stage 1 (KS1) students' academic performance and learning habits. By determining the relationship between class size and student outcomes, this research seeks to provide valuable data that can help educators, administrators and parents understand the importance of a proper learning environment and find effective ways to address the challenges of overcrowding.
