Abstract
This study entitled “Coaching Techniques to Enhance Students’ Journalism Skills of Claver District” aimed to determine the coaching techniques employed by teachers to enhance the journalism skills of student journalists in Claver District during the academic year 2025–2026. Specifically, the study examined the respondents’ profile, the coaching techniques used by teachers, the skill level of student journalists, and the significant relationship between coaching techniques and students’ journalism skills.
The study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design with a survey questionnaire as the main data-gathering instrument. The respondents consisted of 48 teacher-coaches and 70 student journalists from selected elementary schools in Claver District, Surigao del Norte. Statistical tools such as frequency count, percentage, mean, and Pearson r correlation were used to analyze the gathered data.
Findings revealed that the coaching techniques employed by teachers in terms of exposure to latest and historical news, guided understanding through in-depth lectures, repeated writing, revision and refinement, one-on-one coaching, and regular drills and time practice were all interpreted as “Very Highly Employed.” Likewise, the student journalists demonstrated “Very Highly Skilled” levels in interviewing skills, strong writing skills, research and information gathering, and digital literacy.
The study concluded that effective coaching techniques significantly contributed to the enhancement of students’ journalism skills. Consistent guidance, feedback, practice, and exposure to journalism-related activities helped student journalists improve their competencies and performance. It is therefore recommended that schools continue strengthening journalism programs through regular training, coaching sessions, and skills development activities for both teachers and student journalists.
