Abstract
This action research evaluated the effectiveness of the SPACE (Structured Process for Academic and Capstone Excellence) Program in enhancing research competence among Senior High School students at Tanay East Integrated National High School during the academic year 2024–2025. The study involved 40 students and 6 teachers, utilizing surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Mean scores were computed to assess levels of effectiveness, while thematic analysis was used to identify program strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
Results showed an overall mean score of 4.22 (Strongly Agree), indicating a high level of effectiveness. The highest-rated domains were Program Implementation and Delivery (M = 4.33) and Confidence and Motivation (M = 4.23), underscoring the program’s success in providing structured facilitation, interactive sessions, and supportive mentoring that enhanced students’ self-efficacy in research. In contrast, Skills Development (M = 4.12) and Knowledge Acquisition (M = 4.19), while positively rated, pointed to the need for deeper methodological training and more opportunities for higher-order analytical practice.
The study concludes that the SPACE Program is an effective intervention that fosters research competence and motivation, though refinements in methodology exposure, analytical reasoning, and time allocation for hands-on learning are necessary. These improvements will further strengthen the program’s capacity to prepare students as competent and motivated researchers, consistent with DepEd’s mandate to promote critical thinking and 21st-century skills.
