ABSTRACT
This quantitative correlational study examined academic self-concept and academic achievement among Grade 6 students of Quezon Elementary School in Claveria, Masbate. Forty-two learners participated, comprising 22 males and 20 females. Academic achievement was represented by the learners’ general weighted averages, while academic self-concept was measured through the Academic Self-Concept Scale adapted from Liu and Wang. The instrument assessed academic confidence and academic effort using twenty statements. Frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and Pearson product-moment correlation were used to analyze the data. Most respondents achieved at least a satisfactory rating: 16 learners were Satisfactory, 11 were Outstanding, eight were Fairly Satisfactory, and seven were Very Satisfactory. No learner received a rating below 75. Academic confidence obtained a grand mean of 3.29, while academic effort obtained 3.44; both were interpreted as Average Academic Self-Concept. The correlation between the combined academic self-concept score and academic achievement was positive, low, and statistically significant, r = 0.3311, exceeding the critical value of 0.3044 at the 0.05 significance level with 40 degrees of freedom. The null hypothesis was therefore rejected. The findings indicate that learners with stronger academic self-perceptions tended to earn higher grades, although the modest coefficient also shows that self-concept alone did not account for most differences in achievement. Teachers should pair rigorous instruction with feedback, attainable goals, study routines, and opportunities that develop competence. Parents should provide encouragement and manageable home conditions for learning. Future studies should use larger samples, validated local measures, and designs capable of examining changes over time.
