ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN LANGUAGE LEARNING OF INDIGENOUS LEARNERS: BASES FOR POLICY RECOMMENDATION

ABSTRACT

The study explored the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language learning among Indigenous learners in a public high school during the school year 2024–2025. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, five purposively selected Indigenous learners participated in in-depth interviews. Results revealed that commonly used AI applications include Cici, Perflexity, YouGlish, Google Translate, and ChatGPT. Learners used these tools primarily for word translation with contextual explanation and independent information seeking. Key advantages identified were the wealth of information provided and increased learning enjoyment, while disadvantages included technological dependency and reliance on internet connectivity. These findings serve as the basis for proposed policy recommendations to support Indigenous education.
