Mythological characters often survive beyond the cultural settings in which they first emerged because later artists and media reinterpret them for new audiences. In traditional Norse mythology, Loki occupies an ambivalent position among gods and other supernatural beings and is associated with trickery, shapeshifting, and boundary-crossing.
This focuses on three representations—traditional Norse myths, Marvel comic books, and Thor-related films—and examines their similarities and differences through a historical-critical perspective of mythology and folklore. The study is particularly concerned with how recurring characteristics were retained while aspects of Loki’s identity, relationships, role, and characterization were transformed in popular culture.
