ABSTRACT
This study focuses on describing low English reading comprehension among selected Grade 10 students of Santos E. Conag National High School during the School Year 2025–2026. The respondents were identified based on their performance in the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) in English, a nationally recognized assessment tool used in Philippine schools to determine students’ reading proficiency levels. Only Grade 10 students classified under the Instructional and Frustration reading levels were included in the study, as these indicate low English reading comprehension. The respondents were selected using purposive sampling based on these criteria.
The study also aims to provide more insight into the factors affecting the students’ reading comprehension. For this purpose, the researcher used a questionnaire divided into three sections: (1) Reading Comprehension, (2) Reading Interest and Reading Environment, and (3) Academic Reasons. It will include how motivation, interest, and support from others affect reading comprehension. In this way, the study can give new ideas that other research has not fully explained. Furthermore, teacher support and the use of interactive and learner-centered approaches can enhance comprehension skills. Improving English reading comprehension is essential not only for academic success but also for effective communication in a globalized world.
