Abstract
This study aimed to determine the impact of Project LETRA (Literate Empowered Teens through Reading Activities) on the reading fluency of Grade 2 pupils at P. Basas Elementary School, San Fernando District, Division of Masbate Province. Specifically, the study sought to determine the pupils’ reading fluency performance before and after the implementation of the intervention program and to identify whether a significant difference existed between the pretest and posttest scores.
The study employed a quantitative research design using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest approach. The respondents of the study consisted of twenty-one (21) selected Grade 2 pupils who were identified as struggling readers and participants of Project LETRA. Purposive sampling was used in selecting the respondents. Oral reading assessments and fluency rubrics based on DepEd Order No. 27, s. 2022 and the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) were utilized to measure the pupils’ reading speed, accuracy, and expression. Statistical tools such as mean, frequency count, percentage distribution, and paired sample t-test were used in analyzing the data.
The findings revealed that the respondents demonstrated improvement in reading fluency after participating in Project LETRA. The pupils showed better performance in reading speed, pronunciation accuracy, and reading expression during the posttest assessment compared to the pretest results. The statistical analysis further showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest reading fluency scores of the respondents, indicating that Project LETRA positively influenced the reading fluency performance of the Grade 2 pupils.
Based on the findings, the study concluded that Project LETRA is an effective reading intervention program in improving the reading fluency of Grade 2 learners. Therefore, the researcher recommends the continuous implementation and strengthening of school-based reading intervention programs to further support literacy development among struggling readers.
