Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most prevalent birth defects and genetic disorders. The condition shows severe health and developmental complications, which often result in functional and psychosocial impact on individuals that were affected by it. Therefore, having awareness about CLP is important, especially in ensuring comprehensive treatment, reducing social stigma, and improving long-term quality of life. This case study explored the lived experiences of a twenty-year-old college student who has the condition of CLP, with the purpose of investigating how she had handled the clinical and social complexities of cleft lip and palate throughout her life. A qualitative approach was used in the study to explore the participant’s experiences; specifically, a one-on-one interview was used to gather the participant’s background information and allow her to share her personal story freely. Additionally, the group created a documentary film with the participant, and the gathered data was analyzed using thematic analysis to gain more insight about her personal experiences. Participant A showed improved speech clarity given that she underwent a primary surgical repair at six months old and secondary intervention in 2021. Both procedures aimed to repair the palate structure as well as successful restoration of lip integrity. With that, she developed mild residual nasality along with improved oral function. Thus, despite the challenges that she had faced, the participant still managed her academic status and social life. Overall, the findings in this case study were meant to demonstrate that surgical interventions improve the functional and psychosocial development of individuals with the condition of CLP.
