Introduction
Reading comprehension is a foundational skill that plays a vital role in the academic success of learners, particularly in primary education. It allows learners to understand, interpret, and critically evaluate written texts, essential in mastering complex academic materials. A learner’s comprehension of reading materials directly impacts their academic performance, influencing performance across various subjects. However, several factors such as poor literacy foundations, lack of access to educational resources, and socio-economic challenges can hinder the development of strong reading comprehension skills, leading to slower academic progress and reduced self-confidence in learning.
The Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. At its core is the goal of improving foundational literacy skills, such as reading comprehension, which form the building blocks of educational success. This study, titled “A Correlational Study of Socio Demographic Profile, Reading Comprehension and Academic Performance of Learners in San Pascual North District, Masbate,” aims to explore how reading comprehension affects students’ academic achievement and how addressing this issue contributes to sustainable development. Low levels of reading comprehension can lead to reduced cognitive engagement, academic frustration, and poor academic outcomes. This issue not only impacts academic achievement but also links to broader developmental goals. For instance, learners with poor reading skills may struggle to secure decent jobs in the future, directly connecting the issue to SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Strengthening reading comprehension among young learners can break the cycle of poverty by equipping them with the skills necessary for academic and professional success.
