Abstract
One of the focuses of the present curriculum in primary education is for the learners to possess the basic numeracy ability, especially in acquiring the knowledge on how to solve the four basic fundamental operations in the form of mathematical word problems. This study was conducted to examine the effect of the techno-game-based strategy among the grade 6 learners to improve the least learned among the four basic fundamental operations in solving mathematical word problems. This study aimed to get the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test on the grade six learners’ ability in solving mathematical word problems, the significant difference in the mean score between the pre-test and post-test on the grade 6 learners’ ability in solving mathematical word problems, when data is categorized according to the four basic fundamental operations, the significant difference in the pre-test and post-test score on the mathematical word problem among grade six pupils. A sample of 17 participants was used through convenience sampling for a pre-experimental design utilizing the one-group pre-test and post-test. The result of the study revealed that learners scores during the pre-test was relatively low with an overall mean score of 13.88 from the pre-test with the standard deviation of 1.654 and unfolded that there was indeed significant difference in the pre-test and post-test score for the division operation (z = -2.803, p-value = 0.005) that the performance of the learners in division has significantly improved after the intervention. The result indicates that there was a statistically significant difference in the pre-test and post-test scores (z=3.425, p-value=0.001). Therefore, “learners-techno-game-based-strategy” when incorporated in the teaching & learning process evidently indicated the effectiveness of the intervention for the grade 6 learners’ ability in solving mathematical word problems using the basic operations.
