Introduction
Health education is particularly important during the elementary years because children are developing habits and attitudes that may influence their health throughout their lives. Learners need age-appropriate opportunities to understand nutrition, personal hygiene, disease prevention, environmental sanitation, injury prevention, emotional and social well-being, and responsible health-related decision-making. Effective instruction in these areas requires more than memorizing facts. It should encourage learners to understand health concepts, apply appropriate practices, evaluate situations, and demonstrate responsible behavior in everyday life.
Curriculum implementation also requires attention to current policy. The Department of Education has been implementing the MATATAG Curriculum through a phased approach, including Physical Education and Health materials for selected grade levels. Consequently, teachers and researchers must use the curriculum guide, learning competencies, and implementation instructions applicable to the participating grade levels and school year.
