Introduction
Science education is an essential component of elementary education because it introduces learners to systematic observation, investigation, experimentation, evidence-based reasoning, and the application of scientific knowledge to everyday situations. Through meaningful science learning experiences, children develop curiosity about their surroundings and begin to understand the relationships among living things, physical phenomena, technology, and the environment.
In the Philippine education system, the Department of Education has implemented initiatives intended to strengthen science and mathematics education. One relevant initiative is the Special Science Elementary Schools (SSES) Project, which aims to provide enhanced learning opportunities for learners with an aptitude for science and mathematics. DepEd Order No. 51, s. 2010, entitled Guidelines on Strengthening Science Education at the Elementary Level, discusses the implementation and support of the SSES Project. The Department has also published science curriculum guides that establish learning standards and competencies for science education. These initiatives emphasize the importance of appropriate learning activities, teacher capability development, and instructional resources.
