Abstract
This study examined the pedagogical approaches and performance of physical education teachers and practitioners in teaching first aid and basic life support as the basis for developing Project LIFESKILL. Specifically, it determined the respondents’ demographic profile, level of pedagogical approaches, extent of utilization of pedagogical strategies, level of performance, and the significant differences and relationships in the center. The study employed a quantitative research design using descriptive-comparative and correlational approaches. Respondents consisted of 200 participants, including 100 physical education teachers from public and private schools in Rizal and Antipolo City and 100 first aid and basic life support practitioners from accredited organizations such as the Philippine Red Cross, Tanay Mountaineers, and emergency response institutions. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered through the modified-adapted survey instrument and analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The results revealed that the two groups had higher levels of instructional approaches, pedagogical utilization, and performance of first aid and basic life support. The rating of health practitioners was slightly higher than for PE teachers. This was partly because of more specialized training and experience. The majority of demographic variables exhibited no notable differences. However, years of experience significantly influenced practitioners’ performance. A significant relationship was additionally discovered between pedagogical approaches, instructional strategy utilization, and performance among practitioners. The research found that practical experience and training tailored to the individual have a significant impact on the ability to teach first aid and basic life support. The results led to the development of an instructional training module focusing on competencies called Project LIFESKILL to enhance the pedagogical skills and teaching efficacy of PE teachers and practitioners.
