Introduction
Teachers are expected to execute duties beyond classroom teaching such as compilation of school reports, paperwork, records, correspondence and other forms of written outputs essential for school operations. These tasks are important for accountability, communication, monitoring and decision making. However, they may also present difficulties for teachers, particularly when they involve technical language, formal writing, organizing information, formatting, revising and meeting prescribed requirements. Teachers who have not prepared themselves academically in the area of language and communication may need to invest additional time, effort and confidence to produce clear, accurate and well-structured texts. These issues are especially pertinent when considering Philippine basic education because teachers are often saddled with teaching duties along with other administrative and documentation needs.
Against this context, the study “Documenting the Qualitative Woes of Selected Teachers of DepEd Isabela: A Thematic Analysis” investigated the experiences and challenges of selected teachers in the preparation of school reports and documentation. Thematic analysis was used in the study to uncover reoccurring problems, experiences and challenges in the teachers’ narratives. This can give further insight into the variables that make documentation chores challenging for the teachers. The findings are intended to provide an evidence base for the development of appropriate interventions, including capacity-building activities, technical assistance, peer support, writing resources, and more responsive documentation practices that may support teachers in balancing their reporting responsibilities with their primary instructional functions.
